The Merit Badge program is central to the more advanced ranks on the trail to Eagle, and is a chance for the boys to learn skills by working with an accomplished expert in the field of the badge that they are pursuing. Merit Badges are constantly reviewed by National, and a relatively new Merit Badge is Archeology.
Troop Chaplains Aide Josh has been working with ASM Mike M (a certified Archeology Merit Badge Counselor) for several months, and to help Josh fulfill his last requirement the Troop held a simulated archeological dig over a period of two meetings. At the first meeting the Scouts learned about and made “artifacts”. Before the second meeting the clay pots were smashed into shards (thanks, Drew) and then buried at our “dig site”
After the boys learned about proper techniques the dig site was gridded off and the artifacts recovered and catalogued.
Congratulations to Josh T, the first Scout in Troop 189 to ever earn the Archeology Merit Badge!
