Oct Race Brook Falls

For our October trip we camped at Strang Scout Reservation in Goshen, CT and explored Race Brook Falls in Sheffield, MA.  This was planned as a tent trip, but because of severe weather Saturday afternoon and night we moved into a cabin and lean-to’s. We don’t often activate our severe weather alternate plans but the high winds and sideways rain made it a good idea!  We did use our tents on Friday night.

The weather also impacted our hike plans for Saturday. The original plan was to split into groups for a longer and a shorter hike, but the impending storm caused us to all stick together and just climb to the first of the series of the Race Brook Falls. Parts of the hike were very steep and the wet leaves made it slippery.  At one point Scoutmaster Steve rigged a rope for the Troop to hold onto as they worked their way down from the top. We had fun, and made it back to Strang just as the storm broke.

Eddie, Chris, John and Jack chose to sleep in a lean-to outpost down the trail from the cabin, and SM Steve and ASM Art stayed with them.  The rest of the Troop rode out the storm in the cabin.  We told scary stories at night, but the mood was lightened when Ryan broke out his cow costume to become our mascot!.

Thanks to all of the adult volunteers who made the trip happen: SM Steve, ASMs Mark, Art, Mike, and Ed, our Trip Coordinator Andrea and Committee Members, Paul, Marjorie, Cathy, and Paul.
