“Open the gate for Troop 189...

Welcome Home to Onteora!”

That’s how we were greeted on Saturday when the Troop checked in for week 3 of the 2008 OSR summer season. The veteran campers were glad to be back, and our first time campers looked around in awe at all of the possibilities.  We checked in, went through Medical, had our Troop Picture taken, and then had our swim tests.

After the swim tests we hiked up to Iroquois Campsite where we unpacked the gear and settled in. Scoutmaster Steve went over the Merit Badge schedule, and then turned the Troop over to Assistant Scoutmaster Mark who will be supervising this week until Steve returns on Friday night.

Here are some pictures from the Troop’s first hours up at camp:

Our First Week Home at Onteora!

Our first week was challenging because, in true Rainmakers fashion, the camp had some very severe storms and there were a few days when programs were impacted.  Even so, the boys (and adults) persevered and worked through the adverse conditions. Special thanks are owed to Acting Scoutmaster Mark R, who was assisted by his able staff of Kathy, Andrea, ASM Mike, ASM Ed, Art, Marjorie, Annie, Jim, and Eric.  Thank you all of the adult volunteers who made the week happen for the boys!

Our Hike to Wildcat Falls

Scoutmaster Steve and Tobi came up on Friday night and, along with Marjorie, took the boys who were staying the second week on a hike to Wildcat Falls.  They all agreed that this was one of the highlights of the summer.

OSR Second Week 2008

The second week didn’t start off much better than the first - there was a torrential downpour during moving in time and it rained again late Sunday night. That didn’t stop us, and then the weather cleared up after Monday and we had a spectacular week.  All of the boys learned new skills and we participated in Polar Bear swim Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as having entrants in both the “Anything That Floats” race and the “Scoutmaster Belly flop” contests.  The Troop was led by SM Steve, along with his staff of ASM Theo, Marjorie, Tobi, Paul, Anthony, and Bonnie. Thanks to all of the adults who volunteer their time!
