Troop 189 - The Largest Unit at OSR Week 3 2007!

Midweek Report from Onteora
Wednesday, July 18, 2007

So far camp is half over and this is shaping up to be one of our best years ever!  This is our 5th year at OSR, and this year Troop 189 was the largest Troop in camp for our period. Our Troop is represented with a full range, from brand new first year campers up to Staff.

The weather has been good. Even though Long Island has had a few major storms since we left, the camp did not.  Even today, the big storms back home did not reach us.  When we checked in on Sunday there was a little rain, but Monday and Tuesday were perfect days.  It rained last night, but only after the boys were in bed.

Everyone has been busy working on Merit Badges and enjoying all of the activities that the camp has to offer. OSR Days are long days, packed with activity.  We already have a stack of earned achievements, and the boys are rightfully very proud of what they have accomplished. Charles, Matt B and Zach were inducted into the Order of the Arrow, the national scouting honor society.

Troop Hike Wednesday Afternoon

Ed reports:

“On Wednesday afternoon we took a hike. We hiked the Red Trail at Onteora. It was a roundabout loop to the parking lot. On the first half of the hike we encountered some mud. Some boys loved it, and others hated it, but we pressed on. We may have had to dig out a sneaker or two. After we finished the first loop we gave some boys the option of a less aggressive hike to the cars. We did have 18 Scouts go for the more taxing hike. I joined them, and glad I did. We hiked around Orchard Lake. We had some real fun crossing by the Dam. We also saw some interesting mushrooms and Bear caves (no bears). Scoutmaster Mike also pointed out some Beaver houses and how the beavers cut down trees. When the two groups met at the parking lot, what better way to reward all these boys, but with a drive to the local pizzeria for pizza and ice cream.”

Andrea’s Report on the End of the Week:

We had a busy end of the week at Onteora. All the boys earned merit badges and everyone learned at least one new skill of some kind. Our troop had people doing programs in all parts of the camp. We did have 2 entries in the anything that floats contest at the waterfront on the last day  and we did several skits at the closing campfire.

Even though it did rain on Thursday on and off, we are the Rainmakers and this did not scare us.   If your scout has any feedback about Onteora, please also share this with us.

Our chipmunks kept bringing friends to our site and they seemed to be eating very well there.

If anyone has any walkie talkies they did not return, please let me know. As usual, we also have lost items so if you find you are missing anything, please let us know.

We want to thank Andrea, Marjorie, Ed, Eric, Mark, Theo, Mike V, Paul, Steve,
Tom and Mike F who volunteered their time on behalf of the troop,
either by being at camp with us or by helping us transport scouts.

Without their help, we would not have been able to run this program this week.
