The Rainmakers really lived up to their name in October. We were schedule to camp out at Turrell Scout Camp and then take two hikes on Saturday at nearby Sams Point Preserve - one hike to the Ice Caves and then to Vandekeer Kill Falls. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate.
It was pouring rain when we arrived at Turrell to set up on Friday night, and the rain only got harder as the night went on. We set up in the rain, went to sleep in the rain, and the next morning made breakfast in the rain. The guys just put some tarps up and kept going.. Two Scouts, Michael and Anthony, even continued with their plans and set up a Wilderness Survival camp in the rain, but the weather was bad enough that hiking had to be called off for Saturday, since the two trails would not have been passable in the rain.
Instead, the Troop stayed in Turrell on Saturday and ran through a series of Leadership and Teamwork exercises. We did an egg drop, a spider web, tried not to drop the ball, and a batch of other team building games. Then on Sunday the rain finally stopped and we did make it to Sams Point to hike the Ice Cave trail. We got home late on Sunday, but everyone agreed that the hike was worth it!
Special thanks go out to ASM’s Ed and Tobi along with Committee Members Kathy, Jim, and Howard who joined SM Steve to make the trip happen for our boys. Double special thanks to ASM Ed who drove to get some of our wet sleeping bags dried out on Saturday night!!!
