May Camporee

ASM Mark takes a water balloon for the Troop during the “Scoutmaster H2O Challenge”

Every May the Troops in the District gather at Schiff Scout Reservation for a series of themed competitions, pitting their Scouting skills, common sense, and teamwork against the other Troops in the Pequott District. This year the Theme was “Going Green”, and the competitions included:

  • The Poison Ivy Challenge – Can you find and identify Poison Ivy? Poison Oak? If you’re not careful, you may be in for an itchy event. Better study up on what abounds in the natural confines of Schiff Scout Reservation. This is a timed event for a team of 5 scouts that will be easy if you know your stuff. Bring your own Calamine Lotion.
  • The Scoutmaster H2O Home Run Derby – Is your Scoutmaster up to the challenge? Or, will he be Casey at the Bat? This event will also include ten lucky scouts that will be trying out as pitchers for the NY Yankees.
  • The Polar Ice Cap Meltdown – A team of 4 scouts from your unit will be called upon to use their vast knowledge of physics and teamwork to deal with the Polar Ice Cap before mankind drowns and Albany, NY becomes ocean front property.
  • As The World Turns – No, this is not a soap opera. This involves a team of 5 scouts using their natural talents and skills to get from one part of the globe to another. Map skills and compass won’t help you here. And since we know how well units have fared using their compass in prior camporees, it’s just as well.
  • Who’s A Bag of Wind? - This timed event takes skill, teamwork, a whole lot of luck and wind. A team of 4 scouts and ONE Adult will participate in this relay event where physical forces will compete against one another, i.e., gravity vs. wind. Consuming large quantities of beans will not help you in this event, but it may tell you who your friends are.
  • Solar Power or Sylar’s Power? - This is one hot event that will prove just how much you know about the world we live in. Sun tan lotion may not be needed. A team of 4 Scouts will compete in this timed event requiring speed, dexterity and teamwork.
    And finally,
  • THE SPL CHALLENGE...“THE STRAW”

    JUDGED ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
  • WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MY SCOUT LEADER CONTEST – Each unit will use any natural materials actually found in their campsite or around camp to create a camouflage outfit for one of their adult leaders. At a set time in the afternoon session on Saturday, a Staff member will arrive at your site and attempt to locate the adult leader that has been hidden in camp. Points will be awarded if the adult is not located within a set period of time. No, you may not dig a hole and bury the adult leader!
  • IT’S ALL ABOUT ENERGY – Each unit will design, build (beforehand) and then construct at camp any device, machine, contraption, or mechanism that either makes, generates, uses or saves any form of natural energy, i.e., wind, solar, mechanical. Nuclear is not allowed. The device will be judged by Staff for its inventiveness and usefulness in a “green environment”. Units will lose 10 points if they attempt to enlist the services of Mr. John Garvey as a generator of wind power.
  • GREEN COOKING - Each Patrol from each unit will prepare a suitable desert from scratch that you would be proud to serve. Entries must be made at the Camporee and MUST include a detailed recipe. Entries will be judged on appearance, presentation, creativity and taste. Up to 25 Points will be awarded based on the Judges scoring. However, 10 points will be deducted for each Judge that gets ill. Judging will take place at 6:00 PM at the dining hall on Saturday.
  • CAMPSITE INSPECTION – Each campsite will be inspected during the day on Saturday (after breakfast). Inspectors will be looking for Model campsite guidelines, i.e., tent setups, cleanliness, fire safety, Camp gadgets, unit identification, food storage, cooking areas, Etc. 50 points possible.
  • TRIVIA CONTEST – You didn’t think you would get by a Camporee without one of these; at least until some unit gets all the questions correct. Trivia about Going Green? You better believe a lot of the answers might be found in that useful Scout handbook. It might be wise to make sure someone has taken the new, required BSA Hazardous weather training course, now online at www.TRCBSA.org. 100 points possible. Oh, one more wrinkle this year…Your unit loses points for NOT TURNING IN THEIR ANSWERS.
BUDDY SYSTEM – 10 points will be deducted from each unit’s total score for each occurrence that a Staff member finds a scout that fails to follow the Buddy System while in camp.

The boys all had a lot of fun. Special thanks to ASM Mike V for allowing himself to be hidden (how’s that tick check coming, Mike?), to ASM Mike F for his construction skills, and to Andrea and team for their cooking abilities, as well as ASM Mark, who we hear will dry off soon.

Really big congratulations go to Troop Artists Taylor W for coming in Second Place in the Patch Design contest and to Eddie M, whose great design won and was used to make the official Peqoutt 2009 Camporee patches!
