May: Pequott Camporee

May found the Troop at one of our favorite places... Onteora Scout Reservation for the Pequott District Camporee.  Our boys got to compete in a variety of  events and competitions against fellow Scouts from all over the District. There was an Olympic theme and we were assigned to “be” the Eygyptian delegation.  We pitched in with 189 spirit... check out the costumes (thanks Joan)!  We even led a rousing version of Steve Martin’s famous “King Tut” skit at the campfire.

Skills competitions stressed teamwork and Scouting skills... ASM Steve recognized some of the events from his Outward Bound training.  One of the highlights was the “Ultimate Challenge”... an event designed to highten awareness of Scouts with Disabilities. Our team had to raise a tarp using proper knots, but with a physically challenged team. One Scout was blindfolded, one wore earplugs, one had their left hand in their pocket, one kept their right hand in their pocket, and one was on crutches. Under Scoutmaster Mike’s guidance we took a Silver medal in this competition. We also placed in the stretcher/compass relay, the cowpie toss (don’t ask) and the costume competition.

A big highlight of the night was the callout for the troops nominees to the Order of the Arrow’s Buckskin Lodge #412.  Congratulations Evan and Justin for being recognized in front of the whole District!

Alex Says: On the Camporee we had a lot of fun. We did the Olympics and we were Egypt. Most of the events were team events and some were individual events.  There was the Ultimate Challenge where people were blind, deaf and some people could not use their hands and we had to put a tarp up. There was a cowpie toss where you had to throw a cowpie like a Frisbee. There was a water balloon toss where Mike to catch as many water balloons as he could.  We had to make costumes and we were all Egyptians.  We did a King Tut skit where everyone wore their costumes.  Alex, Joe, Matt and Austin started their own fire to cook dinner.
