Leadership

Scouting is a program for boys and led by boys, guided by trained leaders. All of our leaders undergo BSA training, and many bring significant applicable life experience to their roles. Our Scoutmaster is backed up by  uniformed Assistant Scoutmasters as well as an active Troop Committee. The Scoutmaster is responsible for the Program, and the Committee is responsible for logistics, support, and ensuring that the Program adheres to all BSA guidelines and regulations.

Steve Innerfield is the current Scoutmaster of Troop 189

All of our Junior Leadership Corps take official BSA training, and we have had many boys complete the demanding one week long  “Bear Claw” National Youth Leadership Training program. The Senior Patrol Leader is the boy who really runs the Troop and the program.  He is assisted by Patrol Leaders and the other Junior Leaders.  Click here for a complete description of the Junior Leadership opportunities available to our boys.

The Troop is split into Patrols. A Patrol is a group of about 8 boys who work together as a team. The Troop currently has 5 Patrols, plus a special Venture Patrol program for older Scouts.

We always welcome all parents to get involved in the program, to attend our committee meetings, to get training, and to wear the uniform. However, involvement at our Troop meetings and outings is the Scoutmaster's decision.  Parents wishing to join us on trips must first complete their Boy Scouts of America Youth Protection Training. Trip participation is at the decision of the Scoutmaster, and is generally limited to the Assistant Scoutmasters or trained committee members that the Scoutmaster invites or approves the committee to invite.

Our emphasis has always been on safety.  We adhere strictly to all published BSA safety guidelines, including Youth Protection, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, and the Buddy System.  We practice the Buddy System so rigorously that Scouts don’t even go to the bathroom during a meeting without a buddy! As a result we have been complimented by the Commissioners up at Scout Camp that they have never seen a Troop 189 Scout without a buddy or out of touch with his Unit.

Our Adult Leadershiphas been recognized by Scouting for their Accomplishments. While Scoutmaster, Mike F was  awarded the National Scoutmaster Award of Merit, and Andrea S was presented with the Shofar Award by the Jewish Committee on Scouting. Steve, Mike F, Pat B, Mark R,  and Andrea S have all earned the Scouters Training Award.
