Fall Venture Patrol Trip

Membership in the Troop’s Venture Patrol is open to more senior scouts who hold the rank of First Class or higher and are either in the high school, are over 14, or have completed Bear Claw Training.  The weekend of November 15 and 16 seven intrepid Venturers went backpacking with Scoutmaster Steve, Assistant Scoutmaster Mark and Committee Members Andrea and Artie.

It was raining Saturday morning when we left Wantagh (what a shock) and drove up to the Silver Mine recreational area in Harriman State Park.  There we split up our gear, loaded it into the backpacks, and took to the trail. We hiked the Menomine Trail to the Long Path, and them made for the Stockbridge Shelter. We set up tents near the shelter.

All of our meals were prepared trail-style.  ASM Mike made us a great dehydrated meat  sauce for our lunch pasta so we just had to add boiling water. For Dinner we had either beef stew or chicken curry with rice, and for breakfast we made instant oatmeal and hot chocolate.  The weather got very windy and rainy Saturday night and some boys opted to stay in the shelter while others stayed with the tents. When we woke up on Saturday morning the weather was clear again but much, much colder.  Everyone agreed that this was a good adventure and gave us ideas for the Troop’s wilderness trip in December.
