The weather was perfect on Saturday, January 16, 2010 when the Troop gathered at the Norman Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick. Along with friends, family, and classmates of Charles we set out to complete his Eagle Service Leadership Project, which was rebuilding the kayak launching area.
Charles had already had volunteer carpenters pre-cutting the wood pieces. He broke his workers into teams, and each team tackled a different piece of the project. One team built and installed pipe handrails on the dock. Another team rebuilt the handrails on the upper walkway, re-surfacing them with Trex. Still another team assembled two free-standing kayak racks, and then the upper railings were reinforced and had racks attached to hold the 10 kayaks at the park.
The Rangers were thrilled! This was a project which will have a lasting impact on the community, and was a perfect example of how preplanning and proper preparation made the assembly day a snap!
Charles would like to thank everyone who helped on his project.
