Our intrepid Scouts and Leaders went from “Rainmakers” to “Snowmakers” when we participated in the 2010 edition of Blue Nose over Presidents Day Weekend. It has become traditional that Troops from throughout our area converge on our own Onteora Scout Reservation on this weekend every year to prove their winter camping skills.
We arrived on Saturday morning and set up camp in Iroquois - our regular campsite from summer camp. everyone agreed that Onteora looks very different in the winter! We hiked in our gear, set up camp, and had time to sled. Saturday night was a campfire and cracker barrel in the Long House, and then we hunkered down in out tents.
On Sunday we raced in the Klondike Derby, competing in First Aid, Fire Building, Orienteering, And Lashing skills. We raced from event to event in the Klondike Sled that we made, and Troop 189 came in Third Place Overall! Good Job Everyone!
Monday we woke up, broke camp, and hauled out all of the gear, back up the mountain to the parking lot. Then we went to Tobi and Steve’s house for a well deserved hot brunch.
Special thanks go out the the Adult Leaders who braved the cold and snow to make this trip happen - Scoutmaster Steve, Assistant Scoutmasters Ed, Mike, Art, and Andrew, and Committee Members Kathy and Andrea!
